Christmas Town USA

We had not walked through the lights this year yet so we decided to take the boys for a walk to see all of the lights on Friday night. Grant of course loves all of the lights and decorations and Colton seemed to like seeing everything until he fell asleep:) We bundled both of them up and walked all the way into town because they were having a festival in town and we wanted to take Grant to visit Santa. He actually sat on his lap and told him he wanted a bike for Christmas. It was a fun night for all of us. I think we get so used to seeing all of the lights every night (and focus on the traffic we have to deal with) that we sometimes forget to stop and really enjoy the benefits of living in Christmas Town USA:)
Grant was obsessed with playing on this sleigh...I think it was his favorite thing of the night.
Colton all bundled up and staying warm with Dad.
I was so proud of Grant for visiting with Santa!

Remembering Granny

I had the privilege of having and knowing a wonderful grandmother for 33 years, my Granny Harris. She was loving, caring, very independent and loved her family so much. She was fortunate to be blessed with great health for most of the 95 years of her life. She lived independently and had very few health problems until a few weeks ago, which is remarkable. My most fond memories of Granny are spending Christmas Eve with the Harris family each year and spending weekends together at Lake James. She loved spending time with the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren as our family grew larger and larger. I am so glad that Grant and Colton had such a special lady as one of their great-grandmothers.

She became another guardian angel for us, along with Daddy, last Friday. The funeral service yesterday was beautiful and such a celebration of her life. Four family members spoke in her honor including Kelli. We had a huge meal provided by the church afterwards and she would have loved that we were all eating together as a family. I will keep her memory alive for Grant and Colton and feel so fortunate to have had such a loving grandmother for so many years.

Below is the eulogy Kelli shared, which captures a lot of Granny's spirit and many of the memories that I also have of her.

Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children.”  Deuteronomy 4:9
When you think about a perfect life well lived, Granny would be a great example of that.  Granny lived for 95 wonderful years devoted to her family and to the Lord.  As long as I can remember Granny shared with her family the importance of faith. Granny was a very religious woman, but would never preach her faith. She showed by example her a belief in God by reading her Bible daily. Days when I would stay with her when I was little she would read to me from that huge Holy Bible, too big for me even to pick up.

Granny loved her family so deeply, she had 5 wonderful children, Joyce, Barbara, Peggy, Jerry, and my Daddy, Billy David.  I know that she and Daddy are having a great time together up in Heaven.  Daddy has probably already had her make him some country style steak.  Granny also had 12 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren.  I am number 11 of the 12 grandchildren and my most favorite memories of our time together is every year on Christmas Eve we would all come together for Christmas at Granny’s.  Now this is the day that Granny loved the most as well because Christmas was her favorite time of the year. Granny was a bargain shopper, she had to be, and could you image buying Christmas gifts for all of these people in the family? But believe me Granny did and not only one gift but she got 4 or 5 gifts for everyone. She spends time throughout the year taking advantage of sales and shopping the after Christmas sales for the next year.  I do believe that Peggy and Barbara said the gifts for this year are already bought and ready.  One thing that makes it all so very special is we each take turns youngest to oldest and Granny watches us open our gifts individually.  This time with each one of us was special to Granny and she enjoyed it so much. When Granny was able to sew she would make us handmade dolls or animals as a part of our Christmas gifts for the grandchildren.  We were so excited every year to see what she had made. I am very grateful for the loved that was passed down to me from Granny through my aunts, uncles, and parents.

Granny also loved the summertime and spending her weekends at Lake James. Luckily for me so did I, all summer long I would get to see Granny every weekend at the Lake. It was weird Granny did not like the water much, and I do believe I only remember one time in all the years we went to the lake Granny getting on the boat.  Believe me she had her life jacket on the whole time. She liked to stay on dry land cooking for us and watching us play, fish, and ride the golf cart.  Granny also loved the campfires every night.  She would come out with her bonnet on to cover her ears and sit around the fire with our family, Peggy’s family, and any other friend or neighbor that would show up.  Believe me the stories and conversation always turned interesting and Granny always had something to say.  Then on Sunday morning we would all gather together on our porch for breakfast buffet.  Granny always brought sausage links, grits, and coffee.  I think that’s why I like coffee so much now because Granny would let me drink it mixed with lots of sugar and cream.  I am so thankful for my time and memories of fun times with Granny at Lake James.
I am so thankful for the legacy that Granny has left behind for me through her faith, love, and kindness she has shown all these years.  I know I speak for all the family when I say Granny was truly a remarkable person and will be truly missed.  We are all thankful for the love she has shown each of us. Granny even new when everyone’s Birthday was in the whole family, because she would give each of us a birthday card with $5 in it every year.  When Granny was able to cook she would also make us our favorite dessert or cake for our birthday to take home with us as well.  I would always ask for Strawberry Brownie Tort and it was so good.  A few years ago for a Christmas gift with the help of Barbara and Lisa, Granny picked her favorite recipes and put them together in a cookbook for everyone and that is something that all of us will keep and cherish to make for our families now and the future.  I am so blessed to have had Granny in my life for almost 30 years, the love that she has shown me will last me a lifetime.

Granny is not a huge fan of taking pictures so I don't have tons of pictures of her with the boys. Below are a few that I do have.

 Colton meeting Granny
We will miss you so much Granny!

Giving Thanks

We had a great Thanksgiving and spent the day visiting lots of family. We had lunch at my cousin Debbie's house with the Deal side of the family. It was so great to see all of my cousins and for Grant and Colton to get to meet some of their new cousins. There were 11 children there under the age of 6 and Colton wasn't even the youngest (he was 4th to the youngest)! So you can imagine that the kids had lots of fun playing together.

We had dinner with the Martins and enjoyed seeing baby Bryson again. Grant and Colton had a great time playing with MaMaw and PaPaw and we had so much great food to eat all day!

I have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving...my amazing family and friends, my health, my job. I am so thankful to have two healthy and happy boys that are full of life and bring so much joy to our lives. I am thankful for my amazing husband who is a great father and does so much for me and the boys. I am thankful that we have such a wonderful and close knit family and that my boys are surrounded by love at home and each day at school.

I have to say that although the holidays bring so much happiness to my life, it is also really difficult this year since Daddy is not here. He would love every minute of it...watching the kids play, visiting with everyone, laughing and telling jokes. I miss him every day and even more around the holidays. I try to focus on all of the wonderful memories I have and the great times we had together. I know he watches over us every single day and is smiling down from up above and I try to take comfort in that.

6 month well check

At Colton's 6 month well check, he weighed 17 lbs. 12 ozs. (50th percentile) and was 27 1/4 in. long (75th percentile). His head was 17 3/4 in. (90th percentile). He has a large head just like his brother and mom:) He is right on track developmentally and is trying his best to crawl right now. He can get up on his hands and knees, but can't figure out how to move forward yet. He can belly crawl backwards everywhere though!

He has unfortunately had a rough few weeks as far as not feeling well. He has just recently got over double ear infections and a sinus infection. He got his 6 month shots on Thursday and they caused him to get a 102 fever and a lot of soreness with his right leg. We had to take him back to the doctor on Friday night to make sure he wasn't having a serious reaction. His leg was so sore that he was barely moving it and would cry if we moved it:( Thanks goodness he is finally feeling better and hopefully will stay well for a while now!

Colton is such a happy and laid back baby. He is developing the sweetest personality and I love hearing him babble more and more. He had his first fruit yesterday, applesauce, and really loved that! He is still chewing on everything and loves his pacifier and big brother:) I am really looking forward to the fun times to come this Christmas with the boys!

6 months!!

Colton turned 6 months old on Sunday...man time is flying by!! There is no way my baby is already 6 months! He is really getting to be such a big boy! He started his first vegetable this weekend...carrots. He likes them a lot better than the rice cereal and has been doing great with them so far. Last Wednesday, he started babbling "da da da da" and he also says "ba ba ba ba." He has started blowing raspberries and still laughs and smiles all of the time!

He pushes himself around backwards on his belly on the floor (which looks like he is trying to belly crawl backwards). It is pretty funny to watch and you can tell he really wants to be on the move like Grant. Grant can still make him smile, laugh and stop crying and he truly adores his big brother. Grant likes that he can sort of play with him now and he really likes being our helper when it comes to Colton. Colton is also learning to sit up, but hasn't quiet mastered it yet.

He is still an amazing sleeper, loves his bottle and pacifier, and wants to be held up where he is standing all of the time. He drools constantly, chews on everything and I'm pretty sure that he is teething. He has moved up to size 3 diapers and 6-9 month clothes. He will go for his 6 month well check next week so we will be able to really see how much he has grown.

He gets spoiled every day by his daycare teacher, Ms. Dorothy, and we are so thankful for her.

Colton has the sweetest little personality and really makes our family feel complete. I can't believe he is half way to 1 year old and his big brother will be 4 in 6 short months!!

"This is so much better than that cereal, mom!"

These two really love each other!

Can't get enough of this sweet little face:)

It's cereal time:)

This weekend we started rice cereal with Colton. I have to say that it is not his favorite thing yet. I tried to get him to eat about a 1/2 tablespoon in the morning and evening yesterday and today. He did better today, but is still trying to figure it all out:) I'm sure he'll come around and then we can move on to vegetables.
First time trying out the high chair
Such a big boy!

What is this mom??
Notice how he is spitting it out in most of the pics:)

Ok, maybe it's not that bad.

Getting ready for picture day

Wednesday was picture day at school. When there are siblings, they take individual pictures and also take their picture together. Last weekend, I was trying clothes on the boys to get ready for picture day. They were both laughing and acting silly so we decided to take a few pics plus it would be good "practice" (like they haven't had practice taking pics together:)). Their teachers said they both did really well and I can't wait to see how they turn out!
